BITUMEN 80/100

Bitumen 80/100 – Definition and Application

Bitumen 80/100 is another specific grade of bitumen commonly used in road construction and maintenance. The designation “80/100” refers to its penetration grade, indicating the bitumen’s hardness and softness. The numbers represent the range of penetration depth (in tenths of a millimeter) at standard conditions, measured by the penetration test. For Bitumen 80/100, the penetration depth ranges from 80 to 100 tenths of a millimeter.

This grade of bitumen is relatively softer compared to Bitumen 60/70, making it suitable for applications where a higher degree of flexibility is required. Common applications of Bitumen 80/100 include:

  1. Road Construction: Used as a binder in asphalt concrete for constructing and resurfacing roads, particularly in regions with colder climates where a more flexible material is advantageous.
  2. Paving: Suitable for driveways, parking lots, and other paved surfaces that benefit from a softer, more adaptable asphalt mix.
  3. Waterproofing: Utilized in the production of roofing materials and other waterproofing applications due to its adhesive and sealing properties.

The properties of Bitumen 80/100 allow it to perform well in environments where temperature variations require a bitumen that remains pliable at lower temperatures. This flexibility helps prevent cracking and other forms of pavement distress, contributing to the longevity and durability of the paved surfaces.
